As established, you cannot recover the original product key from the server itself. However, the server holds crucial information about the licenses that have been installed. This data can be invaluable for verification and troubleshooting.
You won't find the key on a Microsoft portal. Your primary source of truth is the invoice or confirmation email sent to you by your reseller at the time of purchase. If you can't find the email, the simplest and most direct solution is to contact the reseller directly and ask them to re-send your license key information.
A common source of confusion is the standard Windows Server CAL. Most standard Windows Server CALs and do not require activation.
Open the Start Menu, type licmgr.exe , and press to open the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager . Right-click on your server name in the left-hand tree view. Select Properties from the context menu.
If the original server OS drive is still readable but won't boot, the licensing database is traditionally stored in C:\Windows\System32\LServer . You can back up this directory and restore it onto a fresh install to retain your configurations.
