When you study music on high school, college, music conservatory, you usually have to do ear training. Some of the exercises, like sight singing, is easy to do alone. But often you have to be at least two people, one making questions, the other answering.
This is ok, as long as both have time to do it. And if you sit in your room, practicing your instrument many hours a day, it can be nice to see other people :-) But my experience when I got my education, was that most people were very busy and that it was difficult to practise regularly. And to get really good results, you should practise a little almost every day. Not just a session before your next ear training lesson.
GNU Solfege tries to help out with this. With Solfege you can practise the more simple and mechanical exercises without the need to get others to help you. Just don't forget that this program only touches a part of the subject.

Apoorvai (अपूर्वई) and Poorvaranga (पूर्वरंग)
He makes foreign places feel intimate and close to home.
In Poorvarang , Deshpande takes readers on a journey through East Asian countries, including Thailand, Japan, and Indonesia. The book beautifully balances lighthearted humor with profound reflections on Eastern philosophy, art, and the shared cultural roots between India and its eastern neighbors. It perfectly captures a specific era of urban Maharashtrian culture. The book was also adapted into a legendary one-man stage show by Pu. La. himself, which revolutionized Marathi theater.
P. L. Deshpande's genius was not confined to the printed page. He was a central figure in Marathi theatre, film, and television. He was one of the first people to interview India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on national television. He composed music for numerous Marathi films in the 1940s and 50s, including Amaldar , Gulacha Ganapati , and Chokhamela , and also composed popular non-film songs in the "bhavegeet" genre. His work as a playwright and screenwriter, creating one-act plays ( tuka mhane ata , aamhi latike na bolu ) and full-length adaptations, enriched Marathi theatre immensely.
The brilliance of his literary universe stretches across deep character sketches, satirical plays, sharp essays, and evocative travelogues. The Masterpieces: Character Sketches and Social Satire " further established him as a social critic
Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, affectionately known across Maharashtra and the globe as "Pu La," remains one of India’s most celebrated humorists, playwrights, and social observers. Writing primarily in Marathi, Pu La possessed a rare ability to capture the essence of middle-class life, transforming ordinary daily struggles into extraordinary comedic and deeply moving literature. His books are not merely stories; they are cultural touchstones that continue to resonate across generations.
The play explores phonetics, class distinctions, and transformation. The dialogue delivery and linguistic playfulness remain unmatched in Marathi drama.
If you are new to , do not pick up a serious philosophical work first. Start with this path: a bureaucratic letter
He was heavily influenced by Western classics, particularly George Bernard Shaw and G. K. Chesterton, yet his voice was deeply indigenous. He traveled extensively across Europe and the Soviet Union, and his observations from these trips formed the backbone of his most famous non-fiction works. His strength lay in finding the absurdity in the ordinary—a leaking tap, a bureaucratic letter, or a family dinner turned into a lecture on economics.
Not all are slapstick comedies. Apoorvai is proof of Pu. La.'s versatility. The book documents his travels to Europe and his observations about Western culture, art, and music.
