Madlib's breakthrough came in 2000 with the release of his debut solo album, , on Quannum Records. The album showcased his unique blend of hip hop and jazz, and established him as a rising talent in the underground scene. This was followed by Champion Sound (Vol. 1) (2003), a collaborative album with fellow DJ and producer, J Dilla.
Madlib's music career began in the early 1990s as a member of the alternative hip-hop group The Pharcyde.
